FGS in Action
Fairhaven Girls' School is coordinating with school parent-teacher associations to provide Girls' Inc. programs to girls in the public schools of Whatcom County. These programs will provide facilitator lead activities during the early release schedules of elementary/middle schools. If you are interested in coordinating these programs for your school, please contact us to discuss the possibilities!
Allies in Action: This program is pioneered by Girls Incorporated of Northwest Oregon and addresses a problem common to middle school and high school girls: girl to girl aggression. This program emphasizes nonviolent communication, as each girl learns to navigate social conflict by building a constructive, rather than destructive, peer environment. Girls come to recognize themselves as allies, co-leaders, creators, and communicators.
Operation SMART: Science, Math, and Relevant Technology: Run by Girls Inc., this program responds to the uneven percentage of women versus men who enter careers in the maths and sciences. The curriculum helps girls to overcome learned beliefs, such as “I’m just not good at math,” or the fear that dirt or goo is “yucky.” According to their website, Girls Inc. states, “Girls learn they have a right to be themselves and to resist pressure to behave in gender-stereotyped ways.” By learning to recognize the authentic girl with her authentic interests, we hope to even the scale between the number of women and men who fill these demanding and valuable career roles.
Friendly PEERsuasion: Although the D.A.R.E. program educates middle school children about substance abuse and the tools available to them to resist it, this Girls Inc. program acknowledges that girls are often attracted to drugs and alcohol for different reasons than boys, and consequently respond differently. This drug abuse prevention program is tailored specifically towards middle school girls and focuses on the influences that shape their attitudes toward drugs, including peers, media, body image, and stress.
