FGS Curriculum Overview Fall 2008 Winter 2009 Spring 2009
The Fairhaven Girls’ School will have an integrated, project-based curriculum with the learning structured around meaningful themes. The themes for winter and spring terms build upon the learning from previous terms. Significant brain research indicates that students learn best when material is presented through organizing schemes. While incorporating the Washington State EALRS (Essential Academic Learning Requirements), our program will present the skills and concepts in a way that honors different learning styles and multiple intelligences. The structure of the school year schedule with its fall and spring interims allows students to focus on exciting new projects and activities during the weeks just before winter and spring breaks, when they might otherwise be just counting down the days.
Our faculty designs curricula that stress the importance of leadership, creativity, and entrepreneurship. We want our girls to learn to make calculated risks, based on their perception of their individual and community needs, rather than the pressures of their society. As they acquire learning in the core curriculum areas—math, sciences, and letters—we stress the application of this knowledge to the girls’ surrounding environment and their future career endeavors. Learning and knowledge do not exist in a vacuum, but have relevance and function in the real world.
The Fairhaven Girls’ School Curriculum will encompass the following subjects in alignment with Washington State educational guidelines:
- Language Arts
- Literature & Composition
- Mathematics
- History
