The mission of Fairhaven Girls’ School (FGS) is two-fold:
- FGS will inspire and educate middle-school girls (grades 5-8) in Whatcom County.
- FGS will serve as a community resource for parents, educators and community members.
Fairhaven Girls’ School believes in the potential of the individual and of the human community. Girls in adolescence are entering one of the most critical, powerful, profound and influential stages of human development, with the primary developmental tasks of identity formation and individuation. Rapid physical growth, the influence of peer relationships in concert with the commencement of separation from families, and cognitive shifts from concrete thinking to abstract reasoning mark this critical development stage with staggering variables and potential.
Fairhaven Girls’ School believes that girls will thrive in a single-sex educational environment. Providing a full-spectrum education for grades five through eight, the curriculum will be carefully designed for each girl to embrace a positive, authentic identity, passion for learning, leadership opportunities, and broader connections to the larger world. Girls at Fairhaven Girls’ School will develop competence and confidence through work and service, authentic identity through reflection and creativity, and courage through perseverance. Fairhaven Girls’ School believes that this work is accomplished through respect for and in partnership with families, the school community, the environment and society, at large.
